담배 기업의 환상의 나라는 우리 모두에게 악몽입니다

세계에서 가장 위협적인 기업은 여러분의 친구로 거듭나기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.123 담배 기업은 흡연 열풍을 일으키고, 예방할 수 있는 사망과 질병의 주요 원인을 제공했습니다. 그들은 원인을 해결하는 것처럼 행동하며, 이로 인해 이익을 얻으려고 합니다.456 담배 기업의 위협적이고 위선적인 브랜드 전환은 위험하고 중독성이 있는 베이프 제품으로 “더 나은 내일”과 “담배 연기 없는 미래”를 약속하고 있습니다. 그들은 또한, 지난해 캘리포니아에서 출시한 새로운 담배를 포함하여 매년 6조 개의 담배를 계속 판매하고 있습니다.78910

그다지 “연기 없는”이라고 하기 힘든 현실 : 담배 기업은 캘리포니아에서 새로운 담배 브랜드를 출시했습니다

2022년 캘리포니아 주민이 맨톨 담배를 포함한 대부분 맛이 첨가된 담배 제품 판매를 중단하기로 투표했을 때,11 담배 기업은 이에 대응하여 “연기 없는” 브랜드로 전환하는 것을 고려하지 않았습니다. 그들은 판매가 중단되는 제품을 대체할 새로운 담배 브랜드를 출시하여 수익을 내는 데 중점을 두었습니다.12 새로운 담배는 온라인 프로모션, 눈길을 끄는 마케팅, 대폭 할인을 통해 캘리포니아 주민을 대상으로 특별히 판매되고 있습니다.1314 담배는 과거의 일이며, 우리 모두를 위해 “더 나은 내일”을 원한다고 주장하는 같은 기업에서 판매하는 것입니다.1516

담배 기업은 흡연 열풍을 일으키고, 예방할 수 있는 사망과 질병의 주요 원인을 제공하였습니다.

담배 기업의 혁신은 건강이 아니라 이익에 관한 것입니다

담배 기업은 대중의 이익을 위해 제품 혁신을 추구한다고 주장하지만, 실제로는 건강에 대해 신경 쓰지 않고 이익에만 관심을 두고 있습니다.1718 그들은 베이핑이 폐암과 뇌졸중과 같은 심각한 질병의 위험을 증가시키고, 폐암 발병 위험을 높이며, 불안과 우울증 같은 정신 건강 상태를 악화시킨다는 점을 보여주는 늘어나는 연구 결과를 무시해 왔습니다.1920212279808182838485  

지난 20년 동안 담배 수요가 서서히 감소함에 따라,2324 담배 기업은 기술 스타트업으로 눈을 돌려 전자 담배 회사 또는 제품25 및 제약 회사26를 인수하거나 투자하고, 포트폴리오를 다양화하고 사람들을 중독에 빠뜨리며, 젊은 사람들을 “대체” 고객으로 유치하기 위해 다음 세대의 담배 제품을 개발하고 있습니다. 272829

베이프와 같은 담배 제품은 담배 기업이 담배 사용을 다시 정상화하려는 시도를 위장한 것으로, 매년 전 세계적으로 800만 명이 목숨을 잃고 있습니다.30 만약 담배 기업이 진심으로 사람들이 담배를 끊고 “더 나은 내일”을 맞이하길 바란다면, 담배 판매를 중단했을 것입니다. 대신, 연구에 따르면 담배를 끊기 위해 전자 담배를 흡연하는 많은 사람이 결국 두 제품을 모두 사용하게 되어, 결국 담배 기업은 문제를 악화시키고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다. 3132333435

담배 기업은 공공의 이익을 위해 제품 혁신을 추진한다고 주장하지만, 실제로 건강이 아닌 이익을 추구합니다.

조작 : 믿을 수 있는 기업으로 담배 기업을 포장합니다

담배 기업은 수십 년에 걸쳐 자신들의 주장에 신뢰를 주는 연구를 후원하고, 대중의 인식에 영향을 주기 위해 상당한 자금을 투자하였습니다. 또한, 과학 저널의 “특별판”을 확보하여, 자체 자금으로 연구한 자사의 베이프 제품이 더 안전하다는 내용을 발표했습니다. 36373839 2021년 7월 뉴스 매체들은 쥴(Juul) 이 11건의 기업 자금 지원 연구를 게재하기 위해 미국 건강 행동 저널(American Journal of Health Behavior )에 $51,000을 지급했다고 보도했습니다.40 세계 최대 담배 회사 중 하나인 아트리아(Altria)는 필립 모리스 USA(Philip Morris USA)의 모회사이자, 말보로 (Marlboro) 담배 제조사이며, 쥴(Juul)의 주주였습니다.41 

담배 기업을 대표하는 유료 홍보는 기업의 허위 정보 조작에 결정적인 역할을 해 왔습니다.42434445 또한 담배 기업이 공중 보건을 지키며 “사회적으로 책임 있는” 기업이라는 이야기를 유도하는 데 도움이 되었습니다.46 

  • 담배 없는 세상을 위한 재단, 2017년 10월 설립된 비영리 단체로 “이 세대에서 흡연을 끝내는 것”을 목표로 하고 있으며,47 세계 최고의 담배 생산 업체49인 필립 모리스 인터내셔널(PMI)에서 전액 자금을 지원받습니다.48    
  • 필터 매거진, 2018년 9월 담배 없는 세상을 위한 재단의 긴밀한 지원과 PMI의 부분적인 자금 지원51을 받으며 창간하였습니다. 이 매거진은  “언론을 통해 약물 사용, 약물 정책 및 인권에 대한 합리적이고 동정적인 접근 방식을 옹호”한다고 주장합니다. 그러나 그들은 세계 최대 담배 기업과 그들의 위장 단체로부터 자금 지원을 받고 있습니다.52 또한, 담배 기업의 브랜드 전환에 관한 “뉴스”이야기를 디지털로 발행합니다. 
  • 담배 기업은 신제품과 기업 전략을 홍보하기 위해 월스트리트 저널, 뉴욕 타임즈, 워싱턴 포스트와 같은 주요 뉴스 매체에서 뉴스 기사처럼 보이도록 만들어진 ‘애드버토리얼’이라 불리는 광고 기사란을 구매했습니다. 하지만 이는 실제로 베이프 제품을 홍보하기 위한 공간에 불과합니다.53

담배 기업의 “유해성 감소” 이면의 현실

담배 기업은 제품이 “안전하다”고 인식될수록 더 많은 사람이 사용하고 싶어하는 것을 알고 있습니다.54  

전자 담배 흡연은 캘리포니아주의 위급한 공중 보건 문제로 부상하고 있으며, 특히 젊은이들 사이에 더 확산하고 있습니다. 현재 젊은 성인 중 11.2%가 베이프를 흡연하고 있으며, 이는 모든 연령대 중 가장 높은 비율입니다.55 이 젊은이들은 담배 기업 때문에 청소년 베이핑 유행이 최고조에 달했던 시기의 중고등학생 중 일부였습니다.56 담배 기업은 그들의 제품 때문에 목숨을 잃은 기존 고객을 대체하기 위해 청소년을 활발히 “대체”고객으로 삼습니다.57 또한, 연구에 따르면 전자 담배를 흡연하는 어린이들은 미래에 담배를 매일 피우는 사람이 될 가능성이 3배 더 높습니다.58

담배 기업은 소외 계층에 충격을 주고, 그들을 대상으로 이익을 취하고, 전체 인구와 비교하면 더 높은 담배 사용률과 질병 발생률을 초래하는 인종 차별적인 시스템을 이용합니다.59 캘리포니아주의 베이핑 보급률은 정신 건강 문제를 겪고 있는 사람들(11.4%), 양성애자(9.6%), 다인종(9.6%), 아메리칸 인디언/알래스카 원주민(9.0%) 사이에서 높게 나타났습니다.60 담배 기업은 정신 질환이 있는 사람들이 증상을 완화하기 위해 제품을 사용할 수 있다는 것을 보여주기 위해 오해 소지가 있는  연구에 자금을 지원했습니다.61

전자 담배는 장기적으로 건강에 심각한 위험을 초래합니다

전자 담배 사용은 심각한 건강상의 위험과 연관되어 있습니다. 전자 담배는 뇌졸중 및 만성폐쇄성폐질환(COPD), 심근 경색, 심장 질환과 같은 심각한 만성 질환의 위험을 높이는 것과 관련 있으며, 폐암 발병 위험을 높일 수 있습니다.62636465666779808182838485  

우리는 또한, 전자 담배가 정신 건강 문제와 연관 있으며 청소년과 젊은 성인의 뇌 화학 구조에 영향을 줄 수 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다.68 니코틴은 중독성 있는 뇌 독성물질로 불안, 우울, 감정 기복과 흥분을 증폭시킬 수 있습니다.6970 그것은 발달하고 있는 뇌에 영구 손상을 입힐 뿐 아니라, 여러 종류의 물질에 중독되기 쉽게 만듭니다.71 니코틴을 사용하는 젊은이들은 학습 능력과 주의력에 부정적인 영향을 받을 수 있으며, 이는 평생 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다.72

담배 기업으로 인한 피해를 줄이는 실질적인 방법

담배 기업의 피해를 줄이는 제일 좋은 방법은 중독된 사람들이 담배를 끊도록 돕고, 아이들이 흡연을 시작하지 않도록 예방하는 것입니다. 담배 기업은 매일 110명의 캘리포니아 주민의 생명을 앗아가고 있으며,73 한 사람이 사망할 때마다, 더 심각한 담배 관련 질병으로 30명 이상이 고통받고 있습니다. 74 중독된 사람들이 의료 지원을 포함한 검증된 무료 금연 방법을 이용하는 것이 중요합니다. 상담과 약물치료를 병행하면 영원히 금연할 수 있는 가장 좋은 기회를 잡을 있습니다.75  

캘리포니아는 인구 수준에서 금연 시도를 확대하고 지원하는 데 중점을 둔 것은 30년 동안 증명된 과학 기반 전략의 결과입니다. 캘리포니아는 담배 보급률 감소에 도움이 되는 금연 지원 혁신을 성공적으로 개척해 왔습니다.76 현재, 전국적으로 가장 인구가 많고 다양한 계층이 거주하는 캘리포니아 주는 성인 흡연율이 두 번째로 낮습니다.77 하지만, 주에는 일반 담배와 전자 담배를 포함한 담배 제품을 사용하는 성인이 300만 명 이상입니다. 금연 접근에 대한 장애물을 제거하는 것이 최우선 과제입니다.78
